NOAH WEBSTER
Her signs a card in brown ink
Autograph Sentiment Signed: "Presented by/N. Webster", 4x2½ card. Believing that American children should learn from American textbooks, Noah Webster (1758-1843) introduced his own book, commonly called the "Blue-backed Speller" because of the color of its cover, in 1873. At age 43, he began work on the first American dictionary. In 1828, the 70-year-old Webster finished his work, which contained 70,000 words. Ink lightly spread. Foxed.
