©1979, United Artists Corporation. Captioned at lower margin: "Professor
Bergson (JAMES MASON) and his wife Ariel (PATRICIA NEAL) comfort each other in
their attic hideaway while awaiting their destiny in 'The Passage,' a United
Artists release." This film, directed by J. Lee Thompson, also starred
Anthony Quinn as a Basque mountaineer hired by the U.S. military to guide
Professor Bergson and his family over the Pyrenees. Malcolm McDowell
co-starred as a Nazi determined to capture the fugitives, which included the
Bergson's daughter (played by Kay Lenz). English actor JAMES MASON
(1909-1984) earned Oscar nominations for Best Actor for A Star Is
Born (1954) and Best Supporting Actor for Georgy Girl (1966)
and The Verdict (1982). The versatile Mason could play Brutus (Julius
Caesar, 1953), a master spy (North By Northwest, 1959) or a pedophile
(Lolita, 1962). In the year of this film, he also appeared in
Bloodline, Murder By Decree and The Water Babies and in the
made-for-TV movie, Salem's Lot. Among Mason's other notable films are
Madame Bovary (1949), The Desert Fox (1951), Prisoner of
Zenda (1952) and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954). A leading lady
of American plays and film, PATRICIA NEAL (born in 1926) studied drama in
college and worked as a model before debuting on Broadway in The Voice of
the Turtle (1946). Her performance in the play, Another Part of the
Forest, got the attention of Hollywood, and she made her screen debut in
a light farce, John Loves Mary, in 1949. That same year she was
impressive in The Fountainhead opposite Gary Cooper, whom she later said
was the great love of her life. After marrying British writer Roald Dahl in
1953, Neal disappeared from the screen for several years, returning in 1957's
A Face in the Crowd, after which she was more selective in choosing her
film roles. For her performance in Hud (1963), she won the Best
Actress Academy Award. In 1965, Neal suffered a massive series of strokes
that left her confined to a wheelchair, semi-paralyzed and nearly unable to
speak. Over the next several years, she made a remarkable recovery, returning
to the screen in The Subject Was Roses (1968), for which she received
another Best Actress Oscar nomination. That year, she was presented with the
"Heart of the Year" Award by President Johnson. In the year she made
this film, Neal also appeared in the made-for-TV movie, All Quiet on the
Western Front. Lightly creased at blank margins, lower left and upper right
blank corners chipped away. Minor surface creases (not evident head on). Fine
condition.
