PETE V. DOMENICI. TLS: "Pete" as U.S. Senator from New Mexico, 1p, 8½x11. Washington, D.C., 1981 April 1. On United States Senate letterhead to Jr. (sic, Mr.) John S. Bush, United States Gypsum Company, Washington, D.C. In full: "Thank you for providing me with a copy of your Annual Report. I appreciate receiving this material and having the opportunity to review its contents. Your record looks excellent, and it is good to see such an upstanding company operating in New Mexico. Again, thank you for your correspondence and the material you sent. If I can be of assistance to you in the future, please do not hesitate to call on me. Best personal regards. Very truly yours". Handwritten postscript, initialed: "PVD". In full: "P.S. Excellent". Pietro Vichi "Pete" Cominici (1932-2017) has served as a Republican U.S. Senator from New Mexico since 1973, the longest tenure for the post in the state's history. The first Republican elected to the U.S. Senate from the state in 38 years, Domenici had previously pitched for the Albuquerque Dukes (a Brooklyn Dodgers farm club) for one season and he taught mathematics and practiced law before beginning his political career in 1966, when he won a seat on the Albuquerque City Commission. Two years later, Domenici was elected Commission Chairman (then the equivalent to Mayor of Albuquerque), and he made an unsuccessful bid for state Governor in 1970 before taking his seat in the U.S. Senate. A proponent of nuclear power, Domenici has written two books on the subject, and he is also an advocate for the mentally ill. Lightly creased with folds, lower horizontal fold at the "t" of Excellent. Ink notes (unknown hand) and staple holes at upper left margin, date stamp at upper right margin. Fine condition.
