PETER GAWTHORNE and FLORENCE SMITHSON
The British stage actor and actress sign with their best wishes on their respective sides, with Gawthorne dating his signature 1921 and Smithson dating hers 1918
Autograph sentiment signed: "Best wishes to you and/your smile./Sincerely Yours/Peter Gawthorne/1921", "All my Kindest Wishes/Sincerely Yours/Florence Smithson/12.4.18", 7x4¼. Irish actor PETER GAWTHORNE (1884-1962)is best remembered for his roles in several Will Hay films and for his numbeous bit-roles in the 1940's and 50's. He began acting on the London stage, receiving praise in particular for his part in the 1917 musical The Boy. In film, he often played stern authority figures, with examples being his roles in films such as Sunnyside Up (1929), Stormy Weather (1935), Good Morning, Boys (1937), and Bombay Waterfront (1952). His last screen role was in 1956's Adventure Theater. Stage actress FLORENCE SMITHSON (1884-1936) was the daughter of a theatre manager and dancer, and was destined to appear on the stage from birth. Her first acting role was in the pantomime Dick Whittington at age 3, after which she continued a successful career primarily under her father's management. Smithson made her London debut in 1905 as Chandra Nil in Blue Moon, but found her biggest success as Sombra in The Arcadians in 1909. She of course continued onto other roles, eventually retiring shortly before death in 1932. Left edge notched and creased. Stained along outer margins. Slight creased. Corners lightly worn and creased. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
