Hawaii in 1961, was elected the 44th President of the United States in 2008, making him
the first African American to be elected President. He came to national prominence when
he delivered the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention and was
elected U.S. Senator from Illinois in 2004. Obama survived a bruising primary campaign with
former First Lady Hillary Clinton, the favorite to win the Democratic presidential nomination in
2008 (his future Secretary of State). Then with his running mate, Senator Joe Biden of
Delaware, he won the general election with more than two-thirds of the Electoral Votes
(365-173), defeating the Republican ticket of Arizona Senator John McCain and Alaska
Governor Sarah Palin. Obama, whose father came from Kenya and mother from Kansas, had
been a civil rights lawyer and community organizer in Chicago, Illinois, and a state senator.
Following his inauguration, Obama moved immediately to confront the most serious economic
challenges to face the nation since the Great Depression. In 2012, Obama was re-elected to
a second term, defeating Republican nominee Mitt Romney, former governor of
Massachusetts, by an Electoral College margin of 332-206. His second term focused on
implementing the Affordable Care Act (commonly known as Obamacare), responding to
mass shootings and debates over gun control, and expanding executive action on immigration.
He also prioritized climate change, reaching the Paris Agreement in 2015, and oversaw the
normalization of diplomatic relations with Cuba. During his presidency, he ordered the
operation that resulted in the death of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in 2011.
Obama left office in January 2017 with high approval ratings and remains an influential figure in
American and global politics. Fine condition.
