ROGER BUTTERFIELD
1954 signed letter of the American historian accepting invitation to an exhibit in New York.
Typed letter signed: "Roger Butterfield" in black ink, 1 page, 7¼x10¼. Hartwick, New York, January 31, 1954. On his personal letterhead to "Mr. and Mrs. Dechert", in full: "It was very kind indeed of you to send the invitation for Saturday night, in connection with the Golier Club excursion. I am happy to accept. There is no Mrs. Butterfield at present but I have asked Mrs. Margaret Hazlett of Philadelphia (and Curtis Publishing Copany) to go with me to the various exhibits and the Rosenwald luncheon. IN fact that is one of the reasons that made me so anxious to attend the Philadelphia affair, since she lives there. I hope it is not too presumptuous to ask if she could make up for the lack of a Mrs. Butterfield at your dinner. It would be very interesting to hear something further about Louis A. Godey, who has always seemed like quite a mystery to me. I was working, in somewhat desultory fashion I fear, on the life of George Lippard, who was a writer of Godey's earlier and more prosperous period. But a good life of Godey would be most interesting. I would like have a map for driving if convenient. It could be mailed to me c/o Mrs. W. Hazlett, 326 South 19th street Philadelphia 3. Many thanks. Sincerely," Roger Butterfield (1907-1981) was an American journalist and historian, author of the book The American Past: History of the United States from Concord to Hiroshima, 1775-1945. A conclusive history filled with 1,000 drawings, political cartoons, pictures and photographs with Butterfield's witty text, The American Past became a bestseller. He was also editor of National Affairs for Life Magazine. He joined Life in 1937 after spending years as a reporter for The Philadelphia Evening Bulletin and The Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger. Normal mailing folds. Fine condition.
