drama for Paramount, about a revolutionary black group and the betrayal of one
of its members, stars Raymond St. Jacques, Miss Dee, Frank Silvera and Roscoe
Lee Brown, and introduces Julian Mayfield in the central role of Tank.
Co-starring are Max Julien, Juanity Moore, and Janet MacLachlan." Dee
co-authored the script for this film with Julian Mayfield, who starred as
Tank. Ruby Dee (1922-2014) a multitalented veteran of stage, screen
and television who made her Broadway debut in 1946, married fellow performer
Ossie Davis (1917-2005) in 1948, two years after they met during a Broadway
production. Over the years, they appeared together on Broadway (A Raisin in
the Sun), screen (debuting in No Way Out in 1950) and television
(from Roots: The Next Generation to the PBS series With Ossie &
Ruby). The couple was also active in social causes, including Black
voting rights and the fight against sickle cell anemia. Dee has appeared in a
number of feature films, including Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing (1989)
and Jungle Fever (1991), and she won an Emmy in 1990 for her
performance in Decoration Day on The Hallmark Hall of Fame. Dee,
who also appeared on TV's The Guiding Light, is also an accomplished
writer. In addition to the screenplay for this film, she wrote the 1975
TV play, Twin-Bit Gardens, and published Glowchild, a book of
poetry, in 1972. Both Dee and Davis were 2004 Kennedy Center Honorees.
