Sports Card signed: "Ruby Goldstein". Color, 2x3½. Ringside boxing card #46 (undated), titled "Ruby Goldstein - Referee. " Printed career summary on verso. Ruby Goldstein (1907-1984), a welterweight boxer, was billed as "the Jewel of the Ghetto". He won 54 fights while losing only 6, 38 of the wins by knockout. Goldstein had even more success as one of the ring's most popular referees. He refereed 39 world title fights over 21 years, including Joe Louis - Jersey Joe Walcott, Sugar Ray Robinson - Joey Maxim, and Floyd Patterson - Ingemar Johansson. His last ring appearance ended in tragedy (1962) when he failed to stop a fight in which Emile Griffith pummeled Benny "Kid" Paret, who died ten days later. Ironically, Goldstein had been criticized for stopping some other fights too soon. Goldstein is enshrined in the international and world boxing halls of fame. This sports card is slightly inaccurate regarding Goldstein's record, and it misstates his weight class. Margins trimmed off irregularly.
