SAMUEL S. COX
Congressman Cox writes a note in 1873
Autograph Note Signed: "S S Cox", 1p, 5½x8½. New York, 1873 April 28. Unknown recipient. Begins: "My Dr Sir". In full: "I have ordered for you, a Congressional Directory to reps in 42d Congress. Cant find out the name of this prankist." Editor of the "Ohio Statesman", a Columbus, Ohio paper (1853-1855), Samuel S. Cox (1824-1889) received the sobriquet of "Sunset" Cox, having obtained the appellation from a description of a beautiful sunset witnessed by him and published in his paper. Cox represented Ohio in the House of Representatives from 1857-1865. He moved to New York City and served as Congressman from New York from 1869-1873, 1873-1885, and 1886-1889. He lost reelection in 1872, leaving Congress on March 3, 1873. Two days after Cox wrote this letter, N.Y. Congressman James Brooks died and Cox was elected to complete his term, returning to Congress on November 4, 1873. He was elected Speaker Pro Tempore of the House five separate days in 1876. From 1885-1886, Cox was U.S. Minister to Turkey. Lightly creased. Folds. Stray ink blots and transfer. ¾x½-inch stain at upper left blank margin. Irregular left and lower edges.
