SARAH BERNHARDT
A brief letter of thanks from Bernhardt, with her almost mentioning that she will soon be departing for London
Autograph letter signed: "Sarah Bernhardt" in French, 1¼p, 9x6. No place, no date. Not fully translated. On her "Quand Meme" monogrammed stationery. In part: "Thank you for your thought which gives me joy...." She mentions that she will soon be leaving for London. French stage star Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923), born Henriette Rosine Bernard, who was noted for her remarkable voice, emotional acting and unconventional personal life, began her career in 1862 in comic theater and burlesque, and by the 1870s, she was appearing on stages all over Europe. Bernhardt later made her film debut in Hamlet's Duel (1900), and, although she said she detested the medium, made another film, Tosca, in 1908. Although she was horrified when she saw the finished production and demanded that the negative be destroyed, Bernhardt later appeared in La Dame aux Camelia (1911) and Queen Elizabeth, the 1912 film that provided the revenue to enable Adolph Zukor to establish Paramount Studios. Bernhardt's eccentricities - she slept in a coffin to prepare for tragic roles and kept a champagne-sipping alligator - anticipated later generations of celebrity stars. Lightly soiled. Slightly stained first page. Staple impressions touch text on first page and lower blank margin of signature page. Toned. Corners and edges slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
