JOHN H. SLAUGHTER
Very rare signature from the Tombstone sheriff on the verso of a check for $500.00, most likely made during his time as sheriff of Cochise County.
Check endorsed: "J H Slaughter", 8½x3¼. Check no. 2837 drawn on the account of A.E. Springer at Cochise County Bank. Payable to John H. Slaughter for the amount $500.00. Notorious lawman John H. Slaughter (1841-1922), often noted for his short stature and his powerful guns which worked as an "equalizer", was one of the only men who could safely say he helped tame the Wild, Wild West. Serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, Slaughter was a member of the Texas Rangers, and later became a cattle rancher with his brother. During his policing days, Slaughter handled several lawless towns, eventually becoming sheriff of Tombstone, Arizona, following brothers Wyatt Earp and Morgan Earp after their departure. He also served as the Sheriff of the entire Cochise County for several years, and took all his positions as a lawman very passionately. Slaughter married twice during his life, having two children by birth, and adopting several children with his second wife. Predicted to die at the hand of an outlaw, Slaughter instead died comfortably in bed after retiring almost 20 years prior. Surface creases. Cancellation stamp through right side. Corners lightly worn. Toned. Lightly soiled. Ink stamps. Ink notes (unknown hand). Small tears on bottom edge from separation. Otherwise, fine condition.
