SIDNEY POITIER
Black and white publicity still of Sidney Poitier in a scene from A Warm December.
Photograph signed: "Sidney/Poitier". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 7¼x8¾ (one surface). Still from the 1973 film, A Warm December, the second film directed by Poitier, who starred as Dr. Matt Younger. Captioned at lower margin. Also pictured are Esther Anderson, who played Catherine, and Yvette Curtis, who appeared as his daughter, Stefanie, in the film. Sidney Poitier, the first Black to be honored with an Academy Award for Best Actor (1963, Lilies of the Field), was the top box office star by 1967. That year, the actor, who had already won acclaim for Blackboard Jungle (1955) and The Defiant Ones (1958, nominated for Best Actor), appeared in three popular films: In the Heat of the Night, To Sir With Love and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. On March 24, 2002, at the 74th annual Academy Awards, Poitier, who is also a Kennedy Center Awards honoree, was presented with an honorary Oscar for his groundbreaking work as an actor, director and producer. That night, history was made again as two Black performers captured the top two acting honors: Halle Berry was presented with the Academy Award for Best Actress (the first won by a Black woman) for Monster's Ball and Denzel Washington became the second Black man to earn the Best Actor Oscar (for Training Day). Ink note on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
