Biography
Alexander Ramsey (1815-1903) represented Pennsylvania in the US House as a Whig 1843-1847). President Taylor appointed him the first territorial governor of Minnesota (1849-1853). After Minnesota became a state, it elected Ramsey its second Governor (1860-1863). In this capacity, he became the first Governor to commit troops to the Union Army. He served in the US Senate, as a Republican this time (1863-1875), and as Secretary of War under President Hayes (1879-1881).
