Biography
Archie Mayo (1891-1968), born Archibald L. Mayo, was a stage actor who cut his teeth on 2-reel comedies during the late 1910s and moved on to features in 1926, around the advent of sound. He had over 80 movies and short subjects between 1917 and 1958, including The Petrified Forest (1936), the World War II submarine actioner Crash Dive (1942) and the Marx Brothers film A Night in Casablanca (1946). Remarkably ego-free in his movies (although he reportedly became a terror on the set in his later years), Mayo prefered to have his actors carry the film rather than branding his movies with any distinct directing style. And he worked with some good actors, like John Barrymore (Svengali, 1931), Mae West (Night After Night, 1932), James Cagney (The Mayor of Hell (1933), Bette Davis (Bordertown, 1935) and Paul Muni (Angel on My Shoulder).
