ARTHUR MILLER
Born: October 17, 1915 in New York City, New York
Died: February 10, 2005 in Roxbury, Connecticut
Arthur Miller, one of the most celebrated American playwrights of the 20th century, was born on October 17, 1915, in Harlem, New York City. He was renowned for his powerful dramas that brilliantly dissected the American Dream and the broader societal issues of his time. Miller's extensive body of work includes some of the most performed plays in American theater. His most notable works include "Death of a Salesman" (1949), for which he won the Pulitzer Prize in Drama, and "The Crucible" (1953), a dramatic retelling of the Salem witch trials that served as an allegory for the anti-Communist hysteria of the era.
In addition to his writing, Miller was a public figure with a high-profile personal life. His five-year marriage to Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe and his courageous stance against the House Un-American Activities Committee added to his prominence. Later in his career, Miller expanded his writing into other mediums. He wrote the screenplay for "The Misfits" (1961), which was Monroe's final film, and published a notable autobiography, "Timebends: A Life" in 1987.
