Buford Billy Champion was born on September 18, 1947, in Shelby, North Carolina and he was an American professional baseball pitcher, coach and scout who played eight seasons in Major League Baseball.
Champion attended Shelby High School, where he helped the baseball team win the 1964 Western North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship. The Philadelphia Phillies selected him in the third round of the 1965 Major League Baseball draft. During his minor league career, he led the Northern League in earned run average while pitching for the Huron Phillies in 1966 and later led the Carolina League in that category with the Tidewater Tides in 1968.
A right-handed pitcher, Champion made his major league debut for Philadelphia on June 4, 1969. He worked as both a starting pitcher and reliever during four seasons with the Phillies. His most productive major league season came in 1972, when he made 33 appearances, including 29 starts, and recorded 11 victories.
On October 31, 1972, the Phillies traded Champion, Don Money and John Vukovich to the Milwaukee Brewers for Jim Lonborg, Ken Brett, Ken Sanders and Earl Stephenson. Champion pitched for Milwaukee from 1973 through 1976. In 1974. His final major league appearance occurred on June 5, 1976. Champion appeared in 202 major league games, including 102 starts. He compiled a 34-50 record, a 4.69 earned run average.
