Daniel Francois Esprit Auber (1782-1871) was a prominent French opera composer. Among his successful works were Le Macon (1825) and Fra Diavolo (1830). He was a favorite of King Louis Philippe. His La Muette de Porticis (The Mute Girl of Porticis, 1828) contained a song, "Sacred Love of the Homeland," which was promptly embraced as a major patriotic song. When performed in Brussels in 1830, it touched off a riot which sparked the successful revolt for Belgian independence from the Dutch.
