Born Salvatore Lombino, prolific author and screenwriter Evan Hunter (1926-2005) legally changed his name in 1952. Under the pen name "Ed McBain", he wrote over 50 novels in his "87th Precinct" series (from Cop Hater in 1956 to The Frumious Bandersnatch in 2003), from which he created a TV series of the same name (1961-1962) as well as several TV movies. "Ed McBain" also wrote Matthew Hope mystery novels, and Hunter wrote a number of other books under various pen names. His first best-selling novel was The Blackboard Jungle (1954, for which he also wrote the screenplay for the 1955 film). His other screenplays included Alfred Hitchcock's thriller, The Birds (1963)l. He wrote scripts for TV series, miniseries and made-for-TV movies. Hunter won the Mystery Writers of America's Grand Masters Award in 1986, and was the first American to be awarded the Cartier Diamond Dagger from the British Crime Writers' Association.
