Edward Leo Peter McMahon Jr., better known as Ed McMahon, was born on March 6, 1923, in Detroit, Michigan. He was a prominent American television personality, comedian, game show host, and announcer, whose career spanned over half a century.
McMahon is best remembered as the sidekick to Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson," a role he filled from 1962 until Carson's retirement in 1992. Off-screen, McMahon was a decorated war veteran, having served as a Marine Corps pilot during World War II and the Korean War. He was a tireless philanthropist and advocate for various causes, including muscular dystrophy and animal rights.
