Eileen Herlie (1920-2008, born Eileen Herlihy in Glasgow, Scotland) was an actress of stage, TV and film. Modern audiences probably know her best from her recurring role as Myrtle Lum Fargate on All My Children (1976-2008), with crossover appearances on Loving (1983) and One Life to Live (2000). This role earned her four Daytime Emmy nods between 1983 and 1986. But most of her career was written on the British and American stage. Herlie got her acting start with the Scottish National Players in 1938. She debuted in London in 1942 in Rebecca, with a memorable performance in a West End production of Jean Cocteau's The Eagle with Two Heads. Herlie played Queen Gertrude in several memorable productions, including a turn opposite Laurence Olivier in his controversial (but Oscar-winning) 1948 screen adaptation and opposite Richard Burton in his Broadway and film adaptations of the play, both released in 1964. Herlie had a total of 10 Broadway appearances, including a Tony-nominated performance as Lilly Miller in Take Me Along (1959-1960, 448 performances). Among her film appearances were starring roles in The Angel With a Trumpet (1950), The Great Gilbert and Sullivan (1953) and Freud (1962).
