FIRST LADY ROSALYNN CARTER
Born: August 18, 1927 in Plains, Georgia
Died: November 19, 2023 in Plains, Georgia
Biography
Rosalynn Smith (b. 1927) and 21-year-old Ensign Jimmy Carter were married in Plains, Georgia. After her father-in-law died in 1953, her husband Jimmy left the Navy to return home to run the family peanut business; Rosalynn kept the books. As First Lady of Georgia and then of the United States (1977-1981), Mrs. Carter continued to support her main causes of mental health, the elderly and the Equal Rights Amendment. Like her husband, she has remained active since leaving the White House, writing 5 books (one co-authored by her husband) and presiding over the board of the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving at Georgia Southwestern State University, her alma mater.
