Geraldine A. Ferraro, born on August 26, 1935, in Newburgh, New York, was an American attorney, politician, and diplomat. She achieved national recognition as the first female vice-presidential nominee of a major political party in the United States, representing the Democratic Party in the 1984 elections alongside Walter Mondale.

Ferraro graduated from Marymount Manhattan College and later earned a law degree from Fordham University School of Law. Beginning her career as a public school teacher, she eventually transitioned to law and worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Queens, New York. Her legal career was marked by her dedication to prosecuting cases involving crimes against women and children.

In 1978, Ferraro transitioned into the political realm, winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. As a congresswoman, she served New York's 9th District for three terms, from 1979 to 1985. Her tenure in Congress was marked by her advocacy for women's rights, and she was instrumental in championing legislation that sought to ensure gender equality in pay. Ferraro's most significant moment on the national stage came in 1984 when Democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale selected her as his running mate. This historic nomination marked a milestone in American politics, spotlighting Ferraro as a trailblazer for women in the political arena.

Post her vice-presidential run, Ferraro remained active in politics and public service. She sought the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in New York in 1992 and 1998, although both attempts were unsuccessful. Later, in 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed her as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, a role she held until 1996.
