Pearl Bailey was born on March 29, 1918, in Newport News, Virginia and she was an American actress, singer and comedian.
She began her performing career in her teenage years, singing in nightclubs. During the 1940s, she performed in New York’s Apollo Theater. Bailey's recording career began in the 1940s with Columbia Records. In 1954, Bailey made her Broadway debut in House of Flowers, a musical by Truman Capote and Harold Arlen. One of her most prominent stage roles came in the all-Black production of Hello, Dolly! in 1967, for which she won a special Tony Award. She also appeared in films such as Carmen Jones (1954), Porgy and Bess (1959), and St. Louis Blues (1958). Bailey frequently appeared on television from the 1950s through the 1980s, including on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Pearl Bailey Show (1971), and various guest appearances on variety and talk programs.
In 1975, she was appointed as a special ambassador to the United Nations by President Gerald Ford. Pearl Bailey was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1988. In addition to her entertainment career, Bailey earned a degree in theology from Georgetown University in 1985. She also authored several books, including an autobiography The Raw Pearl (1968) and Between You and Me (1989), a book of advice and reflections.
