Died: July 2, 1915 in Paris, France
Died: July 2, 1915 in Paris, France
PORFIRIO DÍAZ (1830-1915) fought in the Mexican War (1846-1848), in the War of the Reform in support of Benito Juárez (1857-1860) and in the struggle against the French (1861-1867). He ran unsuccessfully for President against Juárez in 1871. In 1876, Díaz overthrew President Lerdo de Tejada and was elected President, serving from 1877 to 1880 and 1884 to 1911. His administrations were marked by peace and material prosperity with foreign investment but also by dictatorial methods. There was little improvement in the lives of the peasants and Díaz was finally forced to resign in a revolt led by Francisco Madero.
