Ralph Bakshi, born on October 29, 1938 in Haifa, British Mandate for Palestine (now Israel), is an influential American director of animated films. Known for pushing boundaries and norms within the animation industry, Bakshi’s work is characterized by its adult-oriented themes and distinctive artistic style.

Bakshi began his career in animation at the Terrytoons studio in New York City, working on series such as "Heckle and Jeckle" and "Mighty Mouse." However, it was in the 1970s where Bakshi truly made his mark. He directed "Fritz the Cat" (1972), based on the comic strip by Robert Crumb, which became the first animated film to receive an X rating for its explicit content. The film was both controversial and successful, establishing Bakshi's reputation for challenging the conventions of animation. Bakshi continued to experiment and innovate with films like "Heavy Traffic" (1973), "Coonskin" (1975), and "Wizards" (1977), often intertwining social commentary with his distinct and imaginative animation style. In 1978, he ventured into fantasy with his adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s "The Lord of the Rings", which was one of the first attempts to translate Tolkien's work into film. In the 1980s and 1990s, Bakshi shifted his focus to television, creating and producing animated series such as "The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse" and "Cool World".
