Richard Basehart was born on August 31, 1914 in Zanesville, Ohio and he was an American actor known for his extensive work in film, television, and stage during the mid-20th century.
His film debut came in Cry Wolf (1947). Among his notable early performances were He Walked by Night (1948), and Fourteen Hours (1951). During the 1950s, Basehart expanded his career internationally, working in Italy on several major productions. He appeared in Federico Fellini’s La Strada (1954) as the tragic circus performer Il Matto (The Fool), a role that remains one of his most recognized film portrayals. Other significant films from this period include Decision Before Dawn (1951), Titanic (1953), Moby Dick (1956) and Time Limit (1957).
In addition to his film work, Basehart maintained an active television career. He starred as Admiral Harriman Nelson in the science-fiction series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964–1968), which became one of his most familiar roles. His television appearances also included The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and Columbo. He narrated the opening and closing sequences of the original Knight Rider series in 1982, a role completed shortly before his death.
