Titta Ruffo, born as Ruffo Titta Cafiero (June 9, 1877 – July 5, 1953), was a renowned Italian baritone known for his powerful and emotive vocal style, earning him the nickname "Voce del leone" or "Voice of the Lion."
Ruffo was born in Pisa, Italy, to a poor family. Despite his humble origins, his vocal talents emerged early, and he began singing in cafés and on ships to make a living. His formal music education began when he won a scholarship to study at the Music Lyceum in Florence.
Ruffo made his professional opera debut in 1898 at the Teatro Constanzi in Rome as the Herald in Wagner's "Lohengrin." His international career took off when he was invited to La Scala in Milan in 1904, where his performance as Figaro in Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" was a notable success. Over his career, Ruffo performed in many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Royal Opera House in London. His repertoire included many significant baritone roles in operas such as Verdi's "Rigoletto" and "La Traviata," Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci," and Puccini's "Tosca."
Beyond his stage performances, Ruffo is remembered for his numerous recordings, which provide an invaluable testament to his vocal capabilities. His interpretations of "Largo al factotum" from "The Barber of Seville" and "Cortigiani, vil razza dannata" from "Rigoletto" are particularly celebrated.
