SIR ALAN PATRICK HERBERT
Handwritten poem signed and dated by the English humorist and parliamentarian
Autograph Poem signed: "The farmer will never be happy again -/He carries his heart in his boots./For either the rain is destroying his grain/Or the drought is destroying his roots./A. P. Herbert/Nov. 24th 1929", 5½x3½. Alan Patrick "A. P." Herbert (1890-1971) wrote 8 novels, 15 plays, many humorous essays, and several collections of Misleading Cases (funny, untrue, and carefully written "law reports"), later a BBC-TV series (1967-1969). Herbert served in the House of Commons as an Independent, representing Oxford University from 1935 to 1950, when the university seats were abolished. Herbert made skillful use of humor to promote legislative reform. For example, he wrote Holy Deadlock (1934), to promote marriage reform, contributing to 1937 legislation allowing divorce without proof of adultery. Other targets of his legislative and journalistic ire included liquor licensing, obscenity and gambling laws, and the entertainment tax. Herbert was knighted in 1945. 3½-inch vertical crease at right. Mounting residue affixed on verso (no show through). Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
