SIR OSBERT SITWELL
The author pens this note on a 3x4¼ piece of paper, giving thanks for an invitation
Autograph Note Signed: "For Vivian Pierce with best wishes and gratitude for her invitation from Osbert Sitwell March 29 1949", 3x4¼. Sitwell (1892-1969), born Francis Osbert Sacheverell Sitwell, is best remembered for his nostalgic five-volume autobiography - Left Hand! Right Hand! (1944), The Scarlet Tree (1946), Great Morning! (1947), Laughter in the Next Room (1948) and Noble Essences (1950) - as well as poems and novels like 1926's Before the Bombardment. During his life, though, he was also known as an acerbic and argumentative figure on the British literary scene, as well as a snob who detested the middle class. The 5th Baronet of Renishaw Hall after the death of his father George Sitwell in 1943, Osbert knew "everyone who mattered" in Britain, from Queen Elizabeth, Consort of King George VI, on down. Osbert came from a literary family; his sister was the flamboyant and even more controversial Dame Edith Sitwell, and his brother was author Sacheverell Sitwell, who assumed the baronetcy of Renishaw Hall on Osbert's death. Irregularly cut edges. Lightly creased and toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
