SMITH AND DALE (JOE SMITH)
Shown as a singing waiter in a still from the film Nob Hill
, signing to a fan twice with his name and his partner's name
Inscribed printed photograph signed twice: "Joe/Smith", "With best wishes/To William Kirk/From Joe Smith/(Smith and Dale)". B/w, 10x8. Smith has signed across his image, and added the name of his partner, "Chas/Dale", across his image. Captioned still from the film Nob Hill (1945). Joe Smith (1884-1981), born Joseph Sultzer, teamed with Charlie Dale (born Charles Marks) as a vaudeville comedy team for 75 years. Smith and Dale, who adopted that name because a local printer gave them discounts on the printed cards of another act, which had folded, came from the same New York Jewish culture which produced George Burns, Eddie Cantor, George Jessel and the Marx Brothers. They were seen on Broadway stages from 1902, and in films from the late 1920s. Though not as well remembered today, their comic dialogue, "Doctor Kronkheit and His Only Living Patient," was as popular in its time as Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First", and equally corny. They are buried in the same plot, along with Dale's wife, with a headstone marked "Smith & Dale: Booked Solid." Fine condition.
