SPIKE JONES
Signature from Jones inscribed to a fan "Sincerely"
Autograph note signed: "To/Elizabeth/Sincerely/Spike Jones", 3½x2 paper. Typed caption affixed in lower right. Typed clipping affixed to bottom right corner. Spike Jones. (1911-1965), born Lindley Armstrong Jones, and his band The City Slickers were capable musicians who specialized in parodying classical and popular tunes. They would often play the first half of a show straight, then reappear in strange costumes with weird instruments, like the one shown here. It was said that you hadn't really arrived as a musical star until you had been skewered by Jones. His hits include Der Fuhrer's Face (1942), mocking Adolf Hitler, and parodies of classical pieces that were collected on the 1971 album Murdering the Classics. Many modern musicians, including Weird Al Yankovic, have been inspired by Jones' parodies. But Jones was an accomplished musician who wanted to show that he could play it straight, too, and formed Spike Jones and His Other Orchestra in 1946 to prove this. This band scored a hit with Laura, which featured a frenetic second half by The City Slickers. Adhesive residue on verso stains through to front center. Lightly toned. Slight surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
