First Day Cover signed: "Susan Sontag", on a 6½x3½ envelope. Postmarked New Haven, Connecticut, September 5, 1980, 15-cent showing Edith Wharton affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Susan Sontag (1933-2004) was an American author, literary theorist, public intellectual and political activist. She graduated from The University of Chicago and got her Masters of Arts at Harvard. Later she studied at the University of Paris. She wrote on the subjects of AIDS, the Vietnam War, philosophy, literature, photography and film and was very critical of the western world. In 1989, when she was the president of PEN American Center (PEN) (which works to advance Literature, to defend free expression and to foster international literary fellowship), Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa death sentence against writer Salman Rushdie after the publication of his novel The Satanic Verses. Sontag's uncompromisingly support of Rushdie was critical in rallying American writers to his cause. She created numerous films, plays, monographs, books and essays. Some of her more famous works include: Against Interpretation (1966), On Photography (1977), AIDS and Its Metaphors (1988), The Way We Live Now (1991), In America (1999) and Regarding the Pain of Others (1988).
