THAYER HOBSON. Typed Letter signed: "Thayer Hobson", 1p, 5½x8¼. New York, N.Y., 1933 October 20. To Mrs. Robert Thomas Hardy, New York, N.Y. In full: "I'm frightfully sorry about the slip in paragraph 7, section 5 of the Gardner contract. I've initialed the correction. Yours sincerely." In the year of Thayer's letter, he published the first of Erle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason novels, The Case of the Velvet Claws. HOBSON (1897-1967) was Gardner's longtime editor and close friend. He had suggested changes to two previously rejected Gardner novels which formed the basis of Velvet Claws. Hobson had purchased the William Morrow Company when Morrow died (1931) and ran it as President and then board chairman until his death. He also wrote several novels under pseudonyms, including Peter Field. Signature smudged at "bson". Slightly soiled. Creased near lower edge. Paperclip impression at top. Overall, fine condition.
