THE TURTLES: HOWARD KAYLAN, MARK VOLMAN, JOHNY BARBATA and JIM PONS
Four band members sign an 8½x11 sheet with lyrics to their 1967 song "Happy Together" printed on it.
Printed Lyrics signed: "Johny Barbata", "Jim Pons", "Howard Kaylan" and "Mark Volman", 1 page, 8½x11. Lyrics to their 1967 song "Happy Together". HOWARD KAYLAN and MARK VOLMAN, both born in 1947, formed the core of a surf band which transformed into a folk rock band and peaked as a pop/roc band in the late 1960s. Kaylan was lead vocalist, Volman a guitarist, saxophonist and accompanying vocalist in a band with an otherwise shifting membership. The group's first big hit was a cover of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" (1965). Its biggest hit and signature song, "Happy Together", topped the charts in 1967. Other hits, including "She'd Rather Be with Me" followed shortly. The Turtles sang the title song for the 1967 film comedy, A Guide for the Married Man. The band's original recording company, White Whale, foundered, and for more than a decade the group lost the right not only to call itself The Turtles, but even to use the names Kaylan and Volman. This didn't stop them. Calling themselves Flo & Eddie, Volman and Kaylan recorded with Frank Zappa, and backed Bruce Springsteen on "Hungry Heart." Since regaining their identity as The Turtles in 1983, the group has toured with some success. American percussionist JOHNY BARBATA began his musical career playing with The Sentinals. He moved to Hollywood and auditioned with the rock group The Turtles. After recording the song "Happy Together" with the group in 1966, he was asked to join and played with the group until 1969. The Turtles hits with Barbata include "She'd Rather Be With Me", "You Showed Me" and "Elenore". After leaving The Turtles, he began playing with the group Crosby Stills and Nash. Barbata worked with the group on tour and in the studio and his drums can also be heard on some of Stephen Stills and Graham Nash's individual works. He later moved to San Francisco and began working with Jefferson Airplane in 1972. He is the only drummer to have played with both Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship. JIM PONS (b. 1943) played bass guitar with The Turtles, The Leaves and The Mothers of Invention. He later worked as a video director for the NFL's New York Jets. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
