Autograph Letter Signed: "Thomas A. Watson", 1½p, 8¼x10¾. Boston, Massachusetts, 1930 August 23. To Mr. Sture. In full: "I have read with interest and understanding you kind notes and comments on my booklet and thank you for sending them to me. Mysticism in all its forms has interested me for many years. Altho its boundaries recede as research methods become more subtle and cooperative yet I am sure there will be for many centuries a readiness in every branch of science beyond classification or the power of human minds to grasp. In writing the thoughts embodied in my pamphlet I tried to omit all the usual expressions with which the Illuminated endeavor to the impossible i.e. make clear to the average man the extraordinary experience that come to one who has attained the higher conscience. Please don't think I am contemptuous of my fellow men when I say that I tried to put - my bunch of carrots - where the donkey could at least- nibble at it, not - high out of their sight, taste or smell. Altho I cannot facilitate myself on a close course with 'God'. I am certain that the highest possible attainment for current man or woman to read the slate so well named Comic Consciousness. When that is attained all else is his. But if the problem placed before the common man is: how to tune himself at one jump with inconceivable Infinite, it is out to be wondered at that so few succeed. My book, perhaps, points out a way to union with the Universal Haring my first singing his part in the stupendous orchestra of the Earth. That I believe is possible to many men and women in the present stage of their evolution. The other is infinitely regard most men's power. I very much enjoyed your poems. I find the noble in import, beautiful in diction and with the fine dignity that covers for simplicity. I thank you for you hearty for giving me the pleasure of reading them which I shall do many times to myself and to your friends. I am hoping Albert will adopt - more simple words and pleasures in his inviting both verse and poem. I should indeed enjoy entering your sphere of influence and am sure I should gain much by so doing but it is hardly likely that I shall create Atlantic again for a year or two at least. Renewing my gratitude for your fine comments and for your noble poetry I am, very dear sir. Very sincerely and cordially yours," Thomas A. Watson (1854-1934) was Alexander Graham Bell's assistant (1874-1877). In 1876, when Bell spoke the first words on his telephone to his assistant in another room "Mr. Watson, come here. I want you", it was Thomas A. Watson on the receiving end. Watson later became research and technical head of the Bell Telephone Company and retired in 1881 a very rich man. Mr. Watson died at 80. Lightly creased. Shaded edges. Slightly soiled. Folds do not touch signature. Overall, fine condition.
