THOMAS CAMPBELL and ARCHIBALD CONSTABLE
Scottish publisher Campbell writes a £15 check to poet Campbell, who in turn signs it over to a third party.
Check Signed and Endorsed: "Archibald Constable", "Thos. Campbell", 9x7½. Edinburgh, 1822 December 4. Filled out by Constable: "Pay to Thos. Campbell by order fifteen pounds and debit [illegible] London". Campbell's endorsement: "Pay to Mr. Donelli [?] the above sum". Also endorsed on verso: "Dominique/Donelli [?]. Check is affixed to a sheet with clipped printed biographies of Campbell and Constable. Ink notes on verso (unknown hand). Scottish poet THOMAS CAMPBELL (1777-1844) penned sentimental poems, beginning with the popular "The Pleasures of Hope" (1799). He also wrote the lyrics of several patriotic military songs, including "Ye Mariners of England" and "The Soldier's Dream." Campbell translated foreign news reports for British papers, and was a strong supporter of Polish independence. After a study of the German university system, he assisted in planning for the University of London, and was later rector of Glasgow University (1826-1829). ARCHIBALD CONSTABLE (1774-1827) was an Edinburgh publisher, stationer, magazine editor, and dealer in rare books. His firm published the works of Walter Scott, and in 1812 purchased the copyright to the Encyclopedia Britannica. In 1827, Constable began publishing a series, Miscellany of Original and Selected Works, an important early effort to supply high quality literary works at a low price. The firm he founded still prospers as Constable and Robinson. Toned and worn. Multiple mailing folds. Edges lightly frayed. Adhesive residue shown through. Otherwise, fine condition.
