American baritone THOMAS STEWART (1928-2006) was best known for his portrayals of Wotan, Amfortas and other imperious Wagnerian roles. A student at the Julliard School, Stewart made his operatic debut as La Roche in a Julliard production. He later performed with the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the New York City Opera, the Berlin Städtische Oper, Covent Garden (1960) and the San Francisco Opera (1962). Stewart, who debuted in Bayreuth in 1960, would continue to be a mainstay of the prestigious festival through the mid-1970s. In 1966, he made his debut with the Metropolitan Opera as Ford in Falstaff. Stewart was married to soprano Evelyn Lear from 1955 until his death, and the couple frequently shared the stage for both operas and recitals and they made several recordings together. British baritone and basso-buffo DEREK HAMMOND-STROUD, born in 1926, is best known for his performances of German operas, especially as Alberich in The Ring and Beckmesser in The Mastersingers, and Lieder. A principal baritone with the English National Opera for ten years, Hammond-Stroud has also appeared at Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, the Munich State Opera, the Netherlands Opera and Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. He has also appeared in televised performances, including The Mikado (1973) and Live from the Metropolitan Opera (1982), and Hammond-Stroud has made a number of recordings. Finnish bass MATTI SALMINEN (born in 1945) made his operatic debut as Philip II in Verdi's Don Carlos at the Helsinki National Opera in 1969. Salminen, who became one of the most important bassists of his day, has performed in opera houses all over the world, primarily in Wagnerian roles such as Gurnemanz in Parsifal, King Marke in Tristan und Isolde and Hagen in Götterdämmerung. Salminen made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival in 1978 and his first appearance at New York's Metropolitan Opera in 1981. Ink lightly "haloed" around Hammond-Stroud's signature. Lightly creased.
