The two had just completed the greatest match in the history of the game, Watson finishing 65-66 to win the '77 British Open by one over Nicklaus. On the 10th tee, with the famous lighthouse in the background, Nicklaus stood one ahead. But the lead was gone after a long Watson putt on 15. Nicklaus missed a four footer on 17 that gave Watson the lead. The Golden Bear heroically holed a 32 footer for birdie on 18 - but Watson was two feet from birdie, and he made it." A five-time winner of the British Open (1975, 1977, 1980, 1982, 1983), Watson was made an honorary member of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews in 1999. After joining the Champions Tour that year, Watson would again return to Turnberry, Scotland, winning the Senior British Open Championship in 2003; he would win a second Senior British Open in 2005 at Royal Aberdeen. Tom Watson (born in 1949), who turned pro in 1971, won 39 PGA tournaments (1974-1998), including eight majors. Since joining the Champions Tour, he has added an additional seven tour victories to his career totals as of October 2005.Lightly creased at blank left and right margins. Fine condition.
