TOMMY JOHN
He has added highlights of his pitching record to this signed baseball.
Baseball signed and annotated: "Tommy John/288-231/2245 Ks/3.34 ERA". Rawlings Official Major League Baseball, Allan H. Selig, Commissioner. John has followed his ink signature with his career won-lost record, his strikeout total, and his career earned run average. Left-hander John, born Thomas Edward John, Jr. in 1943,pitched for six teams from 1963 to 1989, retiring at the age of 46 with a 288-231 won-loss record. He wore the New York Yankee pinstripes from 1979 to 1982 and 1986 to 1989. In 1974, Dr. Frank Jobe had been told to "make up something" by John, who was diagnosed with a career-threatening torn ulnar collateral ligament. Jobe extracted a tendon from John's right arm and used it to replace the torn ligament on his pitching arm, threading the healthy tendon through holes drilled into the bone above and below the elbow. At the time, no one was certain of the outcome, but John went on to pitch another 15 years and win 170 additional games. The procedure thereafter became known as "Tommy John surgery". Over 200 athletes have had "Tommy Johns" since then. A 4-time All-Star, John pitched in two World Series for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1977-1978) and one for the Yankees (1981). Fine condition.
