TROWBRIDGE "TROW" SEBREE
Signing as pilot on a cover from the dedication of the Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania airport
Commemorative Envelope signed: "Trow Sebree" as Pilot, 3½x3½. Envelope with ink stamp cachet commemorating the Airport Dedication and Exhibition Circus in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, held on the postponed date of November 22, 1930, postmarked Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, November 22. Trowbridge "Trow" Sebree (1904-1998) was an early air mail pilot flying contract air route #11 from Cleveland to Pittsburgh. In 1930, the new airport at Wilkinsburg was added to the route. On August 30, 1929, Sebree had successfully demonstrated that a plane could pick up mail without landing, using a special device to snatch the mailbag. Other pilots failed to emulate this feat, however, and the technique was not put into widespread use. Sebree, originally hired by Clifford Ball's Airline, became a pilot for Capital Airlines after its formation in 1929. Corners lightly creased and worn. Minor surface creases (not affecting signature). Lightly soiled on verso. Ink marks on verso (no show-through). Otherwise, fine condition.
