Virgil Thomson (1896- 1989) studied in Paris after graduating from
Harvard University. In the 1930's Thomson worked as a composer in theater - most
notably Four Saints in Three Acts and The Mother of Us
All, where he collaborated with Gertrude Stein. He was the music critic
for the "New York Herald-Tribune" (1937-1954) and won the Pulitzer Prize for
Music in 1949 for his film score for Louisiana Story. Later in life,
he was a mentor for other composers such as Leonard Bernstein and Ned Rorem.
