VIRGINIA MORLEY (WARING) and LIVINGSTON GEARHART
Both sign a program of one of their 2,000 joint concerts.
Program signed: "Virginia/Morley" (in pencil), "Livingston/Gearhart" (in blue ink),6¼x9½. VIRGINIA MORLEY (b. Virginia Clotfelter) and LIVINGSTON GEARHART (1916-1996) met in Paris in 1937, when both were students of Robert Casadesus and Nadia Boulanger. They married, and performed as a piano duet from 1940 to 1954, giving over 2,000 performances in concert and nightclub venues, and on radio. They also worked with Fred Waring's Orchestra, for whom Gearhart also served as an arranger. In 1954, Morley divorced Gearhart and married Waring. Gearhart retired from the stage and became a celebrated music teacher, the author of popular instructional drills. Morley, now Virginia Waring, performed with her new husband. As Fred Waring's health declined, Virginia took the baton for many appearances. After her husband's death in 1984, Virginia Waring - still living in 2012 - became Chairman of Fred Waring Enterprises. She lends her name to the prestigious Virginia Waring International Piano Competition. A two-disc collection, Morley and Gearhart Rediscovered, was released to much critical acclaim in 2001. It features their virtuoso duets of classical music and pop standards. Toned. Corners lightly worn. Ink signature lightly beaded but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
