Typed Sentiment Signed: “I am / Very sincerely yours, / Wallace H. White Jr.” on a 3½x2 piece of paper. William H. White Jr. (1877-1952) gradually became a national figure in American politics, primarily as the Senate Minority Leader (1944-1947) and Senate Majority Leader (1947-1949) for the Republican Party. The more subdued but strong White was given the difficult task of maintaining order between two different factions of Republican Congressmen, led by Robert A. Taft and Arthur Vandenberg respectively. The latter two men predominantly disagreed over foreign policy, an integral issue, especially in those post-WWII years. White was one of the senators who chose to vote against Hugo Black's nomination to the Supreme Court, primarily due to his then-alleged (and now proven) Klu Klux Klan ties. Before he was one of the most powerful men in the United States Senate (1931-1949, three terms), he was a United States House of Representatives member who represented Maine's 2nd district (1917-1931, six terms). Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
