Envelope signed: "Brattain", 6½x3½. Envelope addressed in
Brattain's hand to Sherry Sussman, Las Vegas, Nevada, 15-cent Einstein stamp
affixed, postmarked Tri Cities, Washington, March 29, 1979. Brattain has
signed his name above the printed return address of Whitman College, Walla
Walla, Washington. Brattain, John Bardeen and William Shockley won the 1956
Nobel Prize for Physics for their investigation of the properties of
semiconductors-materials of which transistors are made and for the development
of the transistor. The transistor replaced the bulkier vacuum tube for many
uses and was the forerunner of micro-miniature electronic parts.
Additional cancellation grooves on verso show through lightly at signature.
