Black and white publicity photograph of country legend Webb Pierce leaning on a fence
Printed photograph signed in ink: "My best/to you/Webb Pierce". B/w 8x10, captioned at bottom margin. Webb Pierce (1921-1991) was a Louisiana native, and had his own weekly radio program-Songs by Webb Pierce, at age 15. By 1950, he was in Shreveport and had joined the Louisiana Hayride in its first year. As part of his plan to achieve stardom, he would buy tickets for several young girls line and ask them to sit up front and scream for more-it worked. He started a band that included Floyd Cramer, Faron Young, Tillman Franks, Teddy and Doyle Wilburn, founded a record label, Pacemaker and a publishing company, Ark-La-Tex Music. He moved to Nashville and joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1953 as the replacement for Hank Williams, becoming the most popular country singer in the country. Over the next few years he charted 48 singles with 39 reaching the Top Ten-13 hit number one. He resigned the Opry in 1957 but continued to record until 1982. Having a reputation as a hard drinker, he died of pancreatic cancer, and was posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2008. Creased -not visible head-on. Otherwise, fine condition.
