As President of KWJJ Broadcasting in Portland, radio pioneer Jerman signs Elmel's orchestra to perform Monday through Friday on the station for $45.10 per week.

Standard contract of the American Federation of Musicians, engaging John Emmel and his orchestra to perform Monday through Friday on KWJJ radio between 10 AM and 8 PM for 52 weeks, at times to be mutually agreed. Emmel is to receive $45.10 for 11 hours of work per week, plus a 50% bonus for solo work. WILBUR J. JERMAN (1901-2004), a self-taught radio technician, entered radio broadcasting in 1922, designing and assembling Portland station KQY and becoming its chief engineer. In 1925, he founded his own station, originally operated from his home. This station received its permanent call letters, KWJJ (Jerman's initials) in 1926. That same year, Jerman began experimenting with television, and he added KWJJ-FM in 1946. Jerman retired in 1952, and would have another half century to enjoy retirement. JOHN C. EMMEL was an organist and orchestra leader. He issued several recordings on the RCA label in the early 1950s, including "Oh Promise Me," "Because", Serenade", "Evening Star" and "Tales from the Vienna Woods". This document is from the collection of George Sanders, who became a radio/TV host and program manager at KWJJ. Corners creased. Toned at edges. Multiple mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
