WILL GEER
Christmas card with oval window showing his Topanga Theatricum Botanicum, signed by Geer in red ink on front cover
Christmas Card inscribed and signed: "Love from the Waltons + our Shakespeare Troupe/Will Geer/Dear Lady!", 7½x5¼ folded, 7½x10¼ open flat. Printed photo of some rustic characters outside the doors of a building labeled "Topanga Theatricum Botanicum", below a printed seasonal greeting. Geer's signature shows whether the card is open or closed, the rest of his handwritten comments visible only when card is closed. American actor Will Geer (1902-1978) got his start with Eva Le Gallienne's National Repertory company and often performed in work camps during the Great Depression. Geer made 31 Broadway appearances between 1928 and 1971. His first film was Misleading (1932) and, by the end of his career in 1978, collected over 100 movie and TV credits. A political activist and labor militant, Geer was blacklisted from film during the 1950s, so he founded the Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga, California, a forum featuring dramatic productions and a botanical garden (with every species of plant mentioned by Shakespeare.) He performed in a number of Westerns and was frequently cast as a villain during the 1960s. However, he's best known as Grandpa Zebulon Walton from The Waltons (1972-1978). Lightly toned with paper clip stain at upper right edge. Accompanied by 3½x3½ signed b/w photo. Fine condition.
