WILLIAM E. CHANDLER
Pass to the Senate Chamber, signed by him the month he voted to declare war on Spain
Printed Senate Pass signed in ink: "Wm E. Chandler", 4x2¾. Washington, D.C., 1898 April 14. Visitor's Pass to the Reserved Gallery of the US Senate Chamber. Date filled in by Chandler, but no guest name supplied. William Eaton Chandler (1835-1917) was reporter for the New Hampshire Supreme Court before being appointed to federal positions by President Lincoln, including, in 1865, that of Solicitor and Judge Advocate General of the Navy. After a stint as a newspaper editor, Chandler was appointed Secretary of the Navy by President Arthur (1882-1885). He was elected as a Republican to the US Senate (1887-1901). Chandler signed this pass three days after President McKinley's decision for war with Spain, and less than two weeks before Chandler cast his vote in the Senate for the Declaration of War (April 15, 1898). Chandler would conclude his public career as McKinley's appointee to preside over the Spanish Treaty Claims Commission (1901-1907), resolving financial claims arising from the war. Top right corner lightly creased. Paper residue (previous mounting) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
