Freeman signed this 1956 letter to M. H. Simpson on Paramount Pictures Corporation Inter-Office Communication letterhead to explain that he used an unaccounted $400 from a Petty Cash Voucher to join the Pacific Union Club of San Francisco.
Typed letter signed "Y F Freeman" in blue ink. With black ink notations in unknown hand. 1 page, 8¼x10¾, on Paramount Pictures Corporation Inter-Office Communication letterhead. Jan. 14, 1956. Addressed to Mr. M. H. Simpson. Freeman wrote this letter to explain why he left a balance of $400 unaccounted for from an Oct. 12, 1955 Petty Cash Voucher. He explained that it was used to pay for a $1,000 initiation fee into the Pacific Union Club of San Francisco; he originally intended to pay for $400 of the fee and have Paramount pay for the remaining $600, but decided to switch these amounts later. Freeman asked Simpson to make a correction to Paramount's books to reflect this. Freeman (1890-1969, born Young Frank Freeman) was an executive for Paramount Pictures who headed the studio in the late 1950s. He helped push a transformation in the studio system, which moved away from salaried and strictly controlled producers to the use of outside production units. These production companies were staffed by actors, directors and producers whom the studios enticed with promises of independence and profit sharing. Freeman was also the first winner of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts' Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1956. Lightly toned and creased. Staple holes near top left corner .
