WEBSTER BOOTH and ANNE ZIEGLER
Britain's "Sweethearts of Song" sign an album leaf.
Signatures: "Sincerely Yours/Webster Booth" and "Best Wishes/Ann Ziegler", 4x4½. WEBSTER BOOTH (1902-1984), born Leslie Webster Booth, who began his career with the D'Ogly Carte Opera Company (1923-1927), was one of Britain's finest lyric tenors. He is best remembered, however, as half of Britain's answer to Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. In 1940, Booth and his wife, ANNE ZIEGLER (1910-2003), born Irene Frances Eastwood in Liverpool, whom he had met while filming Faust, began their dual career, singing popular ballads and light operetta pieces in Britain's music halls and on BBC radio variety shows. The couple also appeared together in such musicals as The Vagabond King and A Night in Venice. One of the most popular singing acts in the country during WWII, the couple moved to South Africa when their songs, such as "Only a Rose" and "We'll Gather Lilacs", became passé in Britain. In 1978, they returned to Wales, where they taught music and made occasional public appearances. Webster and Ziegler detailed their remarkable career in their 1951 autobiography, Duet. Horizontal fold touches the upper portions of the "A" and "Z" in Ziegler's signature. Lightly creased at upper right blank corner. Irregular left edge. Fine condition.
